The Thirteen Moons is a celebration of light under the full moon. These photographs were all made in the quiet of the full moon on the Charles River in Massachusetts. I started this twelve month series as Covid got underway beginning in April of 2020 and ending in March of 2021. While the Moon completes 12 full cycles, it’s roughly 11 days short of a calendar year. Every two and a half years or so the difference adds up to an extra 13th moon occurring during the same year, commonly referred to as a blue moon, hence the expression, “Once in a Blue Moon.” In 2020 it happened in October and was complemented by an early freak snow storm.
